Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data BarterX collects and how it is used. It is written for the Nigeria Data Protection Act and similar rules.

Last updated: 1 October 2026

1. Who is responsible

BarterX operates this app. For privacy questions, email hello@barterx.com.ng.

2. Information we collect

  • Account: email address, password (stored by our authentication provider, not as readable text in the app), full name, optional profile photo, and the city or neighbourhood you type (not GPS).
  • Google sign-in: if you choose Continue with Google, we receive the name and email Google shares with us for that sign-in.
  • Listings and trades: item titles, descriptions, photos, location text, exchange and donation requests, offers, trade status, and reviews.
  • Messages: in-app chat content between you and other members about a listing or trade.
  • Safety: reports you submit, and account status (for example if an account is suspended).
  • Technical: session tokens on your device, approximate usage needed to run the site (via our hosting and database providers), and in-app notification records.

We do not collect payment card numbers. BarterX does not take money for items.

3. Why we use it

  • Create and secure your account.
  • Show listings, profiles, and photos to other members.
  • Run exchanges, donations, messaging, and in-app notifications.
  • Send transactional emails (for example about a request) through our email provider.
  • Review reports and keep the community safe.
  • Improve reliability of the service.

4. Who we share with

We share data only as needed to run BarterX:

  • Supabase — authentication, database, file storage, and realtime updates.
  • Google — only if you use Google sign-in (their own privacy policy also applies).
  • Brevo — sending service emails from hello@barterx.com.ng.
  • Netlify (or our current host) — serving the website over HTTPS.
  • Other members — see the public parts of your profile and listings (name, photo, location text, items).

If you contact support on WhatsApp, that conversation is on WhatsApp’s service, not inside BarterX chat.

5. How long we keep data

We keep account, listing, message, and trade records while your account is open and as needed to handle disputes or legal duties. You can delete your account in the app (Edit profile). Some records may be retained where we must (for example safety investigations).

6. Your choices

You can edit your profile in the app, sign out, and delete your account from Edit profile. You can also request access or other help by emailing hello@barterx.com.ng. You can refuse optional photos. If you refuse essential storage, you cannot stay signed in. See also our Cookie Policy.

7. Children

BarterX is not directed at children under 18. Do not create an account for a child.

8. Security

We use HTTPS, account sessions, and database access rules so members only see data they are allowed to see. No service can promise perfect security. Use a strong password and meet people in public.

9. International processing

Our providers may process data outside Nigeria. We use them so the app can function (hosting, login, and storage).

10. Changes

We may update this policy. The date at the top of the page will change when we do.
