Photos and camera
Why: listing photos are required to upload an item. You may also add an optional profile picture.
The app opens your device’s photo picker. On many phones you can choose the camera at that moment. We do not record video or access your whole gallery in the background. Photos you select are uploaded to BarterX storage so other members can see the listing or your avatar.
Network (internet)
Why: BarterX is an online service. Sign-in, listings, messages, and notifications need a connection to our servers.
Account storage on this device
Why: to keep you signed in and to finish Google or email sign-in. See the Cookie Policy.
Google account (optional)
Why: only if you tap Continue with Google. Google will ask you to allow BarterX to receive your name and email for sign-in. You can use email and password instead.
Location (text only)
You type a city or neighbourhood on your profile and listings. BarterX does not request GPS, live location, or background location.
Notifications
BarterX shows alerts inside the app (and may email you about exchanges or donations). We do not currently request the system “push notification” permission to send banners when the app is closed. If that is added later, the device will ask you first.
Install on the home screen
If you install BarterX as an app, your browser or phone may ask to add a shortcut. That does not grant extra access beyond what is listed here.
What we never ask for
- Contacts or call logs
- Microphone or voice recording
- SMS or phone number harvesting
- Calendar
- Precise or background GPS
- Payment or banking app access
How to change access
Use your phone or browser settings for BarterX (or the browser you used to install it) to change photos, camera, or site data. Revoking photos/camera means you cannot upload new listing or profile images until you allow it again.
